HIGHLAND - Long time Highland resident, Martha Rizzo, 87, passed into eternal life on May 18th at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Martha was a generous and kind woman, who devoted her life to her husband and her children. Her family and friends will miss how she could brighten a room with her sense of humor and loving spirit. Her greatest joy and accomplishments were her husband and children. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Martha spent many years volunteering at St. Augustine's School and Church. She also taught religious instruction at St. Cabrini's Home. She was a past president of the Mother's Society and a Girl Scout Leader. She was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. She was well known for her amazing cooking. On June 30, 1940, Martha married Leonard "Leo" Rizzo, who survives at home. She is also survived by five children; Lenny & Ellen Rizzo of Slidell, LA, George and Ellie Rizzo of Hollywood, FL, Maria and Tony Ruberto, Mark and Cathy Rizzo and Joseph Rizzo, all residing in Highland; eight grandchildren, Lenny Rizzo, III, Maria Elena Ruiz, Wendy Blanchard, Jennifer Petrino, Marlena Fells, Mark Rizzo, Michael Rizzo and Vinie Rizzo. She also had five great grandchildren; Gianna and Gene Hunter Ruiz, Franchesca Petrino, Rachael Blanchard and Kala Rizzo. She will be greatly missed by her family and many good friends. Martha is predeceased by her parents; Salvatore and Isabelle Saso, her sisters Margaret Sutera, Frances Gottily, Jeannie Alessi, Helen Troise and her brothers Oscar and Tom Saso. Calling hours are Monday, May 22, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 38 Main St., Highland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Church of Esopus, NY at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Lloyd Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations made in her name to helpmike.org. The mailing address is Michael Rodelli, 62 Hillside Dr., Marlboro, NY 12542.
