Additional Town Databases

Over the years, Sicilian Family Tree has compiled vital records databases for many towns in Italy and Sicily. We have also maintained a list of various websites that host Italian/Sicilian vital records databases. Links and brief descriptions are below.

FamilySearch

FamilySearch has very extensive records for almost every town in Italy and Sicily as well as thousands of other places all around the world. Their 2.5 million rolls of microfilm have been digitized and are available on FamilySearch, entirely for free! Many of these images are indexed, which means they can be searched by name. For the images that are not indexed, they must be searched record by record. Use their Library Catalog to determine what materials are available for the particular towns you are interested in.

Italian State Archives

The Italian State Archives website has digitized images from various State Archives around Italy. These are the same images available on FamilySearch, because FamilySearch actually did the digitizing for the Archives. This website is a little more tedious to use, but everything is free and available to you from home at any time. You can Browse the Archives to search through the records. Just click the name of your province and then either “Explore the Fonds” to search manually or “Search the Registries” to search records that have been transcribed already. In order to save images when viewing these documents, hover the cursor over the image, right click and select Save Image As.

Italian Parish Records

This website has links to digitized parish records and indexed civil records, which can be found on their website as well as FamilySearch and other websites (including Sicilian Family Tree!). See the Search By Region tab at the top to see what links to records are available for your particular town. You can make a donation and they will consult a published census from 1942-1943 to see what the churches in your particular town have on hand. Some of the churches have records going back to the 1300s (!!) but most start in the mid-late 1500s. This can help you make requests for documents, if you know what the church has.

Ancestry

Ancestry is a subscription website that is slowly adding some very good Italian databases. They have partnered with FamilySearch and they are adding some of the FamilySearch databases to Ancestry as a result. However, it’s important to note that you can get those particular databases for FREE at FamilySearch or on the Italian State Archives. With that said, Ancestry offers access to many other extremely helpful databases and you can often access their site for free at your local Family History Center and sometimes at your Public Library.

Geneanum

Geneanum hosts fabulous, searchable databases for Catholic birth, marriage and death records for Tunisia. Thousands of Italians and Sicilians migrated to Tunisia in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, especially from Agrigento Province. The page is in French but with some poking around you can find your names. To obtain actual documents that you find here, look at the top of each page for “la méthode pour l’obtenir“. Again, it’s all in French, but use Google Translate to help!

Sersale.org has compiled a great list of small websites that have transcribed records from Italy and Sicily.

Calabria Exchange has vital records for towns in Reggio Calabria. See the list of towns at the bottom of the Extractions page.

Cosenza Exchange has vital records for several towns as well as church records and some tax records.

The Cosenza State Archives has a searchable database of records and you can use the link at the top right of the page to request copies.

Use the links up at the top of the page to explore the other very informative pages. Also, look for the flags at the top to see the page in your language of choice.The FAMILIES link will take you to the page that will show you the genealogies of the various surnames in the town and in some cases, they have photos too.

Termini Imerese, Palermo Province   WEBSITE	This awesome site has two sections – a subscription section with over 110,000 transcribed births, marriages and deaths from 1820 thru 1910. As of 1/11/09 it is over 95% completed for births and deaths and 100% complete on the marriages – and a free searchable database where members have made entries of births, marriages or deaths for their ancestors in Termini Imerese. A cemetery records database will be added sometime in 2009.

Ustica, Palermo Province WEBSITE	This site represents and ongoing effort to translate, record and link genealogical information for the families of the islands of Ustica, Palermo Province, Italy, and their descendants in America.
Valledolmo, Palermo Province WEBSITE	This website has completely transcribed indexes for births, marriages and deaths in Valledolmo from 1820-1910. You have to download each year’s file, which is a pain, but you can build an entire tree from the indexes alone and then obtain all the original records. These are Excel files.
